[Not a Chapter] The End?

To be honest, it is with a very heavy heart that I am making this post, but I will tell it to you all straight up front. I will no longer be translating Xian Ni. Actually, I am going away from translating all together. I apologize for the suddenness of this announcement but actually it’s something that I have been pondering over many days.

The Reason? I just no longer find the capability within me, to go on translating Xian Ni. I think it was better that I call it quits before I end up eventually extending the schedule to one chapter a month, because that’s what I foresaw in the very near future.

It’s been a great time bringing this amazing novel for you guys to enjoy. By bringing my role in it to an end, it is like letting go of something that has been very close to me for the past many months. I never thought that it would end this early though.

In the end, I am glad for all the support you guys gave me. By you guys of course I am referring to all the readers who had been refreshing this blog like crazy ever since this project began. Also in particular I would like to to thank everyone who ever had a role to play in this project. So thanks Goodguyperson, Flowerbridgetoo, MeTaLMaX, NomYummi, tbc1230, Nahtaivel, CheesyMcBreezy, them guys over at Snowtime, Crazylovedbsk, Petie and DemonKiller.

Anyways, I do sincerely hope that Xian Ni is able to catch the fancy of some more capable translator(s) who is/are able to take this project forward. So I suggest you guys better get onto finding those translators pronto.

So, cya’ll later (maybe?).
Void

P.S. Sorry if I missed someone, I did try to ensure that I got all of you.

Come on don’t bully the new guy, we know what he meant, Chinese action novels. Whether it is pure martial arts or way of immortals, there isn’t much difference.

    • ravelord October 21, 2015 / 1:48 pm

      Wuxia = martial hero
      Xianxia = immortal hero

I hope this LN can transfer to wuxiworld to get more attention and maybe
more translators looking at it. ren is almost finished CD … Crossing my fingers

    • curious October 19, 2015 / 4:13 pm

Indeed a possibility but Ren would have to start over from the beginning. So unless a new translator comes around (or some of the old ones that helped previously take over) that doesn’t mind a difference in translation vocabulary, then we’ll have to wait a long while until we get a new chapter. And don’t forget Ren will take a break after CD.

      • sorenknight October 20, 2015 / 9:23 pm

How much more is there for CD to finish? I’m honestly curious.

  19. Cristi October 18, 2015 / 10:39 pm

Thanks for the awesome translations you`ve offered us so far. It was an amazing ride 🙂 I hope whatever you do in Real Life is going to be even more awesome! I wish you best of luck 🙂

    You rock!

  23. rti1 October 18, 2015 / 10:43 pm

Ahh a dissapointment. Still, its good you chose to get it off your chest early, instead of carrying it around for months and insisting your still doing it. Now you will have more free time to live your life! Cheers!
I certainly hope someone picks it up, but lets just hope it doesnt end up like ST.

    • Light October 18, 2015 / 11:02 pm

Stellar Transformations has a new translator at Translation nations, so hopefully this one gets one too.

  24. DMR October 18, 2015 / 10:44 pm

Thank you for all of your hard work and good luck in whatever you want to do

  25. Sindaregion October 18, 2015 / 10:45 pm

Thanks a lot Void!… I hope someone picks this up, it’s one of my favorite novels.

  26. Jaeger October 18, 2015 / 10:50 pm

Somehow I expected this is going to happen. I think prioritizing RL is more important than translating so thanks for your hard work. Anyways, I also have the same vibes in Ze Tian Ji’s translator, that sooner or later it’s going to be discontinued. Well at least you fought till your last breath so KUDOS.

    • Sindaregion October 18, 2015 / 10:56 pm

The thing is that Void is translating a legitimately complicated (nomenclature wise) novel, using machine translation. That is insanely difficult (just look at mtl) in it’s own right. Considering the 2088 chapters, this was to be expected I guess but still: hats off to Void for his awesomeness and sticking to TLing this.

  27. Robin Sebastian Rigbolt October 18, 2015 / 10:51 pm

Thank you so much for all your chapters, it’s been an amazing ride!!!! I really hope someone else is goign to pick up Xian Ni though, it’s one of my favorite series 😦

  28. Ali October 18, 2015 / 10:52 pm

Hey Since CD is about to end would RWX thoink about picking this up?

    • animesquad7 October 19, 2015 / 11:06 am

I hope so since a lot of popular Chinese novels are already at wuxiaworld, and especially issth is in there, it’s not a bad thing to add another er gen novel.

  29. runsing October 18, 2015 / 10:53 pm

it is not easy to persist as long as you did, considering the lenght of each chapter.

hats off to you. wish you well.

  30. darklordcorwin October 18, 2015 / 10:55 pm

First I would like to thank you for all the effort you have put into this project and the time it has taken. Thank you.

Second, I’d like to register a general complaint. What is up with all these translators that pick up projects and then don’t have the fortitude and work ethic to carry through? I understand that real life sometimes happens, or that you lose interest in a project. That is not something that is limited solely to translating, it can happen to anyone, anywhere.

That having been said though, I can’t be the only one who feels that if you pick up a project, you should carry through. It’s getting extremely frustrating seeing one person take on something, then drop it or pass it to another group, that at some point drops it as well in some bizarre game of translation hot potato. And then, we, the faithful leechers, are forced to sit in limbo on our favorite stories. Waiting, hoping against all odds that someone will decide to pick up someone else’s work to finish it.

And this is fairly vain hope. No one wants to pick up someone else’s work. They want to put their on stamp on the community. Which means every time a project gets dropped, there is less and less likelihood that it will be revived. And waiting for an English licensing to see it translated…..we might as well hope to win the lottery while we’re at it.

I’m not trying to indict you. I’m sure you have your reasons. But I hope you can understand mine, and other readers frustrations. It’s not just you, but every translator who ever picked up a project and then dropped it again. At least one or two have made an effort to shop their project around to find a new translator ahead of time. But even then, there are arguments to be made about consistency then. I realize that translating is a long, arduous process which at times can be daunting. Especially when you are looking at a series that might have 1400 chapters that get longer as the series continues. Or even a series that hasn’t even finished publication and may go even further.

But I also believe that translating is a commitment. You pick a project up, and offer it to the community to read, you are committing to finishing that project barring an actual emergency or a DMCA. Not just because you have become apathetic. If that was the case, none of us would go to work.

And yes, before anyone gets their pantsu in a twist, I am learning a foreign language specifically so I can translate stuff on my own time, at my own pace, and not for public consumption because I don’t want to commit to a project such as this. So I’m going to preemptively tell you to get off your high horse before you tell me to learn to translate in order to read, because I’m already on that road.

I don’t want it to seem like I’m doing nothing but bashing on you and the translation community. But this isn’t the only project that’s been dropped in the last 2 months, not even the second. And it’s getting to the point where I’m reluctant to read any series, knowing that a translator might stop after 50 or 200 chapters, leaving us hanging as to the rest of the story.

Let me say again though, just in case it wasn’t clear before, THANK YOU. Thank you for your time, your effort, your patience, and your forbearance in taking on this project.

TL;DR = Get over it, if you can read 150+ chapters of any project, then you can read this comment before you comment on it.

    • Sindaregion October 18, 2015 / 11:11 pm

Well, Xian Ni is already finished at 2088 chapters, so there are still 1909 chapters to go. Compare to coiling dragon’s ~800 chapters and Ren’s demonic translation speed, do you really think this novel could be finished so easily? Void +team have only translated around 8.6% of the whole story, so it’s not like if they went for a final death sprint–and (lol) strained their life force–they would have gotten much of anywhere. Considering the difficulty of an Er Gen translation, it’s been done pretty well, and it was mentioned before that Void was not sure if he would be able to finish.

I really just hope another serious translator can pick this series up.

      • darklordcorwin October 18, 2015 / 11:48 pm

First and foremost in response, I’m not trying to compare any individual or group to RWX and his monstrous speed and quality of releases. That would not only be unfair, it would be unreasonable. Your average group would need at least 3 translators, 3 editors, and 1 person to make sure there is consistency to manage what RWX does in a single day, working every day.

All I’m trying to do is vent my spleen over what I consider to be a growing problem in the community. I’m not try to compare lengths, or even intimate that they made a death sprint to the end. Xian Ni could have had 10 chapters left when they decided to stop, my rant would have remained the same. I’m not even trying to compare difficulty, I know some projects are more difficult than others, either because the style the author chooses to use or the dialect or even the words themselves defy translation.

My main, but not my only, point was that we are seeing a lot of individuals or groups picking up projects and then later dropping them because they get 1) Bored or 2) Annoyed at Leechers or 3) Annoyed at someone else on the projects or 4) someone else grabbed the project for some reason or 5) for a variety of other reasons. All of which leaves us with one singular inescapable fact. Many projects get dropped and never completed. And it’s not just the WN/LN community. It’s any project, anywhere. Although at this moment I’m speaking specifically in regards to translations.

Yes, there are other reasons to complain about the community and which might be contributing to projects being picked up and/or dropped on a whim. Translators or translation groups that pick up an ongoing or recently dropped project, post 2 chapters and then immediately feel their efforts are worth $40/chapter may have something to do with rising frustrations in already established translators. But I’m not getting into that right now.

I too hope that someone will come along and finish the project. I hope they do so in a timely manner with a fair degree of quality and consistency. I’m just tired of seeing projects dropped period.

      • Sindaregion October 19, 2015 / 6:37 am

        @darklordcorwin

I was just trying to show you how large a project Xian Ni is, and what monstrous stubbornness and will is required to actually translate all of it (especially as a hobby). So while abandoning projects is a problem, it sadly is a fact in the translation community that truly can’t be avoided all to easily.

    • Robin Sebastian Rigbolt October 19, 2015 / 12:18 am

Well said man 🙂 I’m hoping that perhaps RMX will pick it up, or just someone else at Wuxia World 🙂

      • darklordcorwin October 19, 2015 / 12:35 am

From your keyboard to their ears.

    • xandarth October 19, 2015 / 8:05 pm

If it really bothers you, you could learn Chinese and translate the entire novel for us. Problem solved.

Oh wait, you sound exactly like the sort of person that complains about other peoples levels of moral fortitude simply because they don’t cater to your sense of entitlement, yet never does anything to resolves issues that upset you using your own ability.

      Good luck with that.

      • darklordcorwin October 19, 2015 / 10:36 pm

And this is how I know you didn’t read the whole thing since I explicitly covered this point. Maybe before you go tearing someone else down, you pay a little attention first.

But, since you seem to lack the mental fortitude, not moral, I’ll break it down for you.

In order to read novels that are in other languages, I am currently learning another language, as I pointed out before. However, because I know I don’t have the patience to deal with the leechers, I have no plans at this time to share any translations I may do at a future time with anyone else. I am going to translate solely for my own benefit. That was my solution, using my own skills(or learning new skills as the case might be) to resolve an issue. I have been attempting to learn a new language for the last four months.

What exactly are you doing to solve this sense of entitlement you have that encourages you comment on something without reading and understanding the full content of the post?

      • darklordcorwin October 19, 2015 / 10:52 pm

I’m sorry, ignore the first reply to you. Apparently I shouldn’t read and reply as soon as I wake up and roll over before I have any caffeine. It makes me cranky. But I do wonder where you are getting this bs about “moral fortitude” and “sense of entitlement”. I thought I was pretty clear that I was not only grateful for what they have done so far, but also understanding that sometimes, other things get in the way. I was simply letting off steam on the most recent blog to drop a project concerning the subject of dropping projects.

I thought I was also pretty clear that I was already taking steps to ameliorate this issue to my own satisfaction by learning another language, but at the beginning of that process, roughly 4 months ago, decided not to translate for the public, but only for my own personal benefit, so that I would not be tied to schedules, or hounded by impatient and ungrateful leechers. I chose not to make the commitment to start a large project for anyone other than myself so that I wouldn’t end up in the position of having to explain why I dropped a project after committing to it if that were to happen.

But now that I’ve explained how I’m working to resolve the issue to the best of my ability, what are you doing about it? Or are you simply the type of person who snipes at other people using the anonymity of the internet instead of helping solve the problem?

    • Deci October 20, 2015 / 8:13 pm

Going to work is something you do in order to make a living, this isn’t. This is just something he/she does during their free time, possibly after work, something to relieve stress. However now instead of having stress relieved whilst doing this thing, it’s actually creating stress. When/Where does he find the time to relieve the built up stress?

To make it clear, I agree with you but at the same time I can’t blame em, especially when the projects are such a long term commitment (2000 chapters). Like the majority of the people after a while being committed in the a short term, we start to lose focus and we slow down, still trying to stay committed but in the end, the nope train comes and scoops us up. I ain’t a translator but damn am I trying to stay committed.

I think the translator should first try and reach out to see if anyone wants to pick up his translations first then quit, because I know of a few translators where they quit, but instantaneously it’s picked up again and continued on schedule because the original translator help/showed/whatever the new translator get started or simply the translator just passed it on to the few people translating with him.

  45. Brent Schaefer October 19, 2015 / 12:21 am

It’s a shame you were pressured into quitting. This is by far the best Chinese light novels out there and it seems to get more complex and interesting with time. It is a shame that your fans won’t be able to see the rest of this story ark. I appreciate the massive amount of time and effort you produced when translating this series and think that at the very least if it is to be picked up the person translating should be approved by you. If you ever decide to start translating again I recommend a donation Que so at the very least you get paid for your work. I know Wuxia World has a large following and they may be able to help you finding a new translator in the future.
    Once again THANK YOU.

  46. DemonKiller October 19, 2015 / 12:36 am

Man it may sound cheezy at this point, but best of luck for everything in your life dude, it really been a good ride working with you although only for a short while but still, you really are a heck of a translator.

  47. iEatpotatoes October 19, 2015 / 12:54 am

  57. Kristen October 19, 2015 / 2:54 am

Thank you so much for introducing us to this series and for your work so far. It’s been a good run, and I’m very grateful.
It’s a shame, but I respect your decision. This honestly doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me since it was obvious that your real life was becoming busier. Life comes first.
I hope someone else will pick up this series so we can continue reading about Wang Lin’s adventures. Thank you again for all you’ve done.

  58. EtherealToxin October 19, 2015 / 3:14 am

Sad for moving on, but you will probably be replaced by someone else in relation to this project, eventually, considering the number of people interested in it. And life goes on. Enjoy the beauty of the despair known as real life.

  74. TD October 19, 2015 / 1:40 pm

Hey Void, I just want to thank you for the work you have done! You got me into Xianxia. Xian Ni was the first novel I read in the genre. That got me to Flowerbridgetoo’s MGA and then to Xuxiaworld and all the wonderful things there. But it all started with you. You are special to me. Thanks and good luck in the future. Do the things you love.

    For all the haters:
It takes a special man to dig a hole and not all of us are like Ren or Bruce Willis from Armageddon. For Void it was simply not fun to dig holes anymore, which is sad because we love to watch them beautiful holes.

    Best regards,
    TD

  75. charles October 19, 2015 / 2:47 pm

add your translation to wuxiaworld.com. you will get much more viewers, collect donations, and recruit support staffs/editors.

so you only need to focus on 1st rough translation, while your support staff polishes it up….

  76. Aeo Vyn October 19, 2015 / 5:28 pm

Thanks for the hard work 🙂

  77. Fan October 19, 2015 / 5:30 pm

  82. XianSparks October 19, 2015 / 9:28 pm

First off, thank you Void and your team. You guys are awesome. Secondly, I hope someone sees this post and jumps in. I am going to attempt to pick up where you left off. All help is welcome, you can find me at my email, up to void if he let’s it show.

This is going to be one hell of a try. I hope that I can come close to where void left off but my biggest problem is I do not have anywhere to host, nor do I know anything about that stuff.

Well here goes! Give me until this weekend to release the first one and remember this is my first time.

    • nikiknight001 October 21, 2015 / 12:40 am

  86. Master Disaster October 20, 2015 / 12:51 am

I just started reading Xian Ni a few month ago and honestly at first i was a bit disappointed at some translations or the releasespeed but well i appritate your work you have done for the community and i won´t complain because i don´t think i can even scratch at what you have done;)
I hope we see us again, maybe you will pick it up later 😉

  87. Aslam Klauq October 20, 2015 / 2:44 am

Wow. I don’t know what to say when I read this.

    Thank you, Void.

Xian Ni is the first translation that I read, and that was in June. Since then, I have been reading like a maniac. After Xian Ni, I have read Douluo Dalu, Zhan Long, Coiling Dragon, Stellar Transformation, ISSTH, The King’s Avatar and Against The God, all to the latest chapters translated. Combined, that is more than 1000 chapters. In less than 4 months.

And it started with Xian Ni. It started with Void’s.

So thank you, Void. All the best to you in your future undertakings.

    • nikiknight001 October 21, 2015 / 12:37 am

I know the feeling (TT~TT) it has really been along journey, my RL Varsity work got the bitter end of my frenzy, which has started to morph into refreshing gmail 24/7 for updates but truly I don’t regret it. Void introduced me to an amazing world. Thank you Void for everything, best of luck on the next amazing chapter in your life.

  88. willuwontu October 20, 2015 / 7:11 am

Thanks for all your work translating.

  89. Eccentric Lezmier October 20, 2015 / 4:34 pm

    Have a nice life

  93. dharmox October 21, 2015 / 4:40 am

It really sad considering i was reading this from beginning. And i was fighting with those annoying asshole who think translator without money would be motivated as someone who is like to slave a translator. This is it as the end of everything i said from chp 40 or something. Translator need to fight with real life, to be professional you need money not just fucking dedication, thats truly bullshit man. All of translator need a little bit money for their motivations. And some hypocrite leecher attacked me for that reasons. I think it is sad to see u leave your fantastical piece of 179 chapter work. The beginning chapter you was not very flow with mtl after 100 chap it is good to see your work. I hope you continue with translating other work or work with your army of translator in other translations. Thank you for translations, may God bless you with your choices.

  94. xxpointblanqxx October 21, 2015 / 7:18 am

Gonna miss you man. Thanks for introducin us to this great one. Maybe you’ll wind up picking it up again in the future 😉

  95. Asf October 21, 2015 / 10:03 am

Whats the reason for the drop?
Do you feel that the story is getting unbearable? Or do you feel tired of translating because it become a burden..? Or is it because of something in real life that takes much time that you cant translate anymore?
I hope you can answer for this last time void. 😥

  96. Roko suti October 21, 2015 / 8:33 pm

Dam well this is another one that I enjoyed that was canceled. Im not sure I understood the reason behind the cancellation but I hope you pick it back up after my deployment. See you later hope you have a good break and come back soon.

  97. Haru October 22, 2015 / 3:41 am

Thank you very much for your hard work all this time, this is the way you quit being a translator, like a man (immortal for us). I’ve known other translators that just deleted everything without a word (Koong Koong). The meaning of this is sharing and you have shared so much with us, all your effort was not in vain. Thank you from my hear, I wish the best for you.

  98. Haru October 22, 2015 / 5:24 am

    heart’

  99. EztTheDeath October 22, 2015 / 1:16 pm

Thanks for translating Xian ni….i really enjoyed reading it :D….. sorry to hearing that u r stopping it…

  101. MrCheng October 22, 2015 / 6:32 pm

Hi Void I’ve been lurking on this site for a while now but I need to say this at least now; thank you for translating this. I got into Xian Ni through the manhua/manga but my interest would never have really kicked off without your translations. Also, thank you for providing raw sites.

For anyone who wants to read a head at any cost and incase no one picks Xian Ni up for a long time:
    http://www.quanshu.net/book_567.html
    and https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/translator/9wzdncrfj3pg

This translator app doesn’t give me as much of a headache as google translator and works best with the quanshu site (I saw a huge improvement when switched raw sites). 800+ chapters in, I can understand 70 – 90% of whats going on each chapter depending on who much explaining the author tries to do. Although there will always be grammar mistakes and miss matching genders; you can usually work it out by paying attention. Some chapters are 99 percent understandable. Try it out if you want, you might just find it works well for you as well.

  102. sheehan0915 October 22, 2015 / 10:18 pm

Please comment it below if someone has picked this novel up

    THANK YOU :p

  104. jrebong October 23, 2015 / 4:35 am

Even one chapter a month is preferable to dropping it all together. Just when the story was getting to the good parts too 😦

  105. Dargudieon October 24, 2015 / 1:40 am

Thanks for your hard work! 😀

  106. daimyokage October 24, 2015 / 1:57 pm

Man when i saw this page I was saddened. I had just managed to catch up too hahah. Well I hope things go well for you Void. Its not like you can’t come back one day and continue this if it strikes your fancy. Obviously this wasn’t that interesting a story for you or you would at least translate a chapter or two on the side per month if only to see how it continues. No worries I can understand that this might inevitably not be someone’s cup of tea. Or coffee.

  107. Fernan October 24, 2015 / 9:54 pm

      Thx bro

  120. heshekell November 5, 2015 / 1:30 am

Oh boy. I got here late since I was waiting for more chapters to “stack” before reading again. Not going to lie, I’m disappointed. I loved Xian Ni and loved this group when it came out. All good things come to an end. Sadly, for the last 3 years this has been especially been true 😦 but…I sincerely wish you well. Once things that are stressing you out are gone and rl life improves, who knows? You may not see it now, but who know? You may just get the desire one day to do some translations. Therefore, I’ll wait for you to complete your secluded meditation. To immortals, thousands of years pass in just the blink of an eye.

  121. Kevin Li November 16, 2015 / 3:59 am

Uh this might be late, but i just noticed a new translator team picked up this series. Here’s a link to chapter 180.
